TYPES OF VOLUNTEERING

Personal Instruction for Adults – Tutor
one-to-one or in a small group, lead groups, teach courses,
become a buddy or assist a teacher.

Personal Instruction for Families – Help
parents read and teach their children, improve job-interview
skills, improve computer and homemaking skills.

Program Awareness – Raise awareness
about adult and family literacy by volunteering to be a
guest speaker, persuading organizations to support your
program and contacting state and local government officials
to support literacy issues.

Program Support – You can do a
great deal, from greeting people to providing transportation
for parents, donating books, writing stories, editing a
newsletter and record keeping.

Policy Making and Governance – Play
an important role in making sure a Literacy Organization
is run effectively, has adequate resources, and is responding
to the real needs of the community by serving as a board
or committee member.

Donating Goods and Services – You
or your company can donate prizes and incentives, give
used equipment from your office, offer your space for tutoring,
or even offer free graphic design or printing services.

Mentoring – Offer positive reinforcement
and help to individuals and families by tutoring and being
a great role model.

Professional Development – Use
your professional experience to volunteer on a committee,
become a part of a resource pool, present workshops or
offer professional help on a one-to-one basis.
